ACADEMY WINTER SESSION 4

COMBINATION PLAY

WARM UP - (10 MINS)

COACHING POINTERS

ACCURACY, WEIGHT & SPEED OF PASS

In order to combine effectively, passes need to be played at the appropriate speed and time to a teammate who is ready to receive. Where possible, quick passing should be encouraged, to shift the point of attack.

SUPPORT AROUND THE BALL

Supporting players need to be aware of the position of their teammates with and without the ball and the opposition players. Supporting players must provide communication so that the player in possession is aware of their options.

MOVEMENT TO EXPLOIT SPACE

Players should use a range of movements to unbalance opposition players to create space for themselves or their teammates to receive the ball.

COMBINATION TECHNICAL PRACTICE - (15 MINS)

COACHING POINTERS

WEIGHT OF PASS

Players should play a firm pass into the receiving players so in a game situation the pass would not get intercepted by the defenders.

BODY SHAPE TO RECEIVE

When receiving the ball to switch the play, players should receive the ball on the half turn and their back foot. If players are receiving in front of a defender to set the ball back, players should receive on the front foot with their arms out for balance and protection of the ball.

CREATE SPACE TO RECEIVE

Encourage players to move away from defenders to create an angle to receive a pass.

NOTES: USE ONE OR TWO DEFENDERS INSTEAD OF OBJECTS FOR DEFENDERS

CONDITIONED GAME (15 MINS)

COACHING POINTERS:

TEAM TO PLAY OUT FROM THE BACK

Players need to be aware of their positions and create width, depth and length to provide passing opportunites to play forwards.

MOVEMENT TO CREATE & EXPLOIT SPACE

Players should move to create space to receive and pass forwards by moving long to receive short, moving short to receive long, inside to receive outside, and outside to receive inside movements. These movements are designed to unbalance defenders and create space to receive.

SUPPORT PLAY

Players need to recognise how to create overloads in each area of the pitch and take up positions around the ball to combine, ahead of the ball to play forwards, and behind the ball to change point of attack and defend against the counter
