ACADEMY WINTER SESSION 12

WARM UP - 1v2 TAG (5 MINS)

Overview:

Setup a tight area for the appropriate age group. All players are placed into groups of three, with one player that is an attacker and the other two players that are taggers. In this game, the one attacker has to avoid being tagged by the two defenders. Once a defender has tagged the attacker, they then swap roles. Play for one minute, the player that is the attacker at the end of each round wins the game. Adjust the length of the round as well as the area size to meet the needs of the players.

Coaching Points:

Movement/Speed:  Players throughout this game need to continually dodge and avoid opponents as well as move towards other players to grab their bibs. Encourage players to explore different ways that they can twist and turn as well as change speed to help them to get as many bibs as they can.

Awareness: To help players to be aware of where the defenders are in the game, they should continually look to check their shoulders to identify where they are, how they are moving and where the spaces are too. Encourage attackers to keep their eyes up whilst moving to help them to make quick decisions.

Communication: Defenders should work together with one another to help them to tag the attacker. Players should look to communicate with one another to help share where they are going to force the attacker, but also to agree a strategy whilst they’re chasing the attacker down.

1v1s: As the attackers are playing in a 1v2 situation, they will need to adjust their body and ways in which they move to help them get success in this situation. Encourage players to explore different ways of adding disguise, changes of direction and feints to help them evade their opponents.

Progressions:

  • Give the attacker a ball that they have to try and retain and keep away from the two defenders. If the defenders win the ball, they then swap roles with the attacker.

5-6pm SKILL SESSION - IN & OUT TRIANGLES (10 MINS)

Overview:

Set out a number of triangles using 3 cones around the area. Each player must try to dribble through as many triangles as possible in a given amount of time. Emphasise the change of direction, in one side of triangle and out another side at speed. Experiment with parts of the foot used to enter and exit the triangles. Head up to prevent bumping into other players and finding empty triangles as much as possible.

Coaching Points:

Eyes Up: Players should look to keep their eyes up in order for them to be able to see what space they have in front of them and how/what type of touches and turns they need to use as they travel around the area.Keeping their eyes up will also allow them to see the opposition as well.

Dribbling: Smaller touches with the laces will help the attacker to keep the ball close to their body but they may need to take bigger touches with their laces to move into space if it opens up for them to move into. Players should be encouraged to dribble with the ball on both feet using different surfaces of either foot.

Speed: As players move across the area they should aim to go as fast as possible while keeping control of their football. To do this they will need to be aware of the area and other players and keeping the ball in front of them. When there is lots of space they should accelerate and use bigger touches to cover the ground.

6-7pm SKILL SESSION - AROUND THE CLOCK (10 MINS)

Overview:

Each player begins with their own ball at a cone around the outside of boxed area in centre. Players must dribble into the centre square and turn out of the area and move on to the next cone, in a clockwise direction. On coach’s call they must change direction and move anti-clockwise. All players must turn out of the central area every time, practicing dribbling at speed, decelerating into the box to perform a turn in a congested area and then acceleration out of it.

Coaching Points:

Eyes Up: Players should look to keep their eyes up in order for them to be able to see what space they have in front of them and how/what type of touches and turns they need to use as they travel around the area.

Dribbling: Smaller touches with the laces will help the attacker to keep the ball close to their body but they may need to take bigger touches with their laces to move into space if it opens up for them to move into. Players should be encouraged to dribble with the ball on both feet using different surfaces of either foot.

Turns: As players approach the middle they should be challenged to use a variety of different turns on both feet. As players turn, they should scan and check their shoulders to adjust the speed of their touch after they turn to move into the space. Players should use disguises to help feint for when they change direction as well.

Progressions:

  • Add a defender in the middle zone that must try and win the ball from the attackers. If they do this successfully, they should then swap roles with the attacker.

5-6pm SKILL SESSION - IN & OUT TRIANGLES (10 MINS)

Overview:

Setup 4 cones each 2 yards apart followed by a goal 10-12 yards away, mirror this on the other half of the pitch. Behind the first cone the players line up. The first player in each queue dribbles through the cones to then get a shot on goal, they then join the opposite line. Once they do that the next player goes, work for 4 minutes at high intensity.

Coaching Points:

Eyes Up: Players should look to keep their eyes up in order for them to be able to see what space they have infront of them and how/what type of touches and turns they need to use as they travel around the area. Keeping their eyes up will also allow them to see the opposition as well.

Dribbling: Smaller touches with the laces will help the attacker to keep the ball close to their body but they may need to take bigger touches with their laces to move into space if it opens up for them to move into. Players should be encouraged to dribble with the ball on both feet using different surfaces of either foot.

Shooting: The attackers should be encouraged to take shots quickly after beating the opponent, or if the goals aren’t being blocked by them. Encourage the attacker to use both feet when finishing, this may require a ‘finesse’ finish with a place/passed finish into either one of the goals.

6-7pm SKILL SESSION - SHOOTING CIRCLE (10 MINS)
